Day 34, Nicene Creed, 26th Line

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

If you’re new to the Creed, and/or new to trying to understand the Trinity, you’ve probably just read this line and are now asking the question… What?!

It’s okay. You’re not alone. The relationship that is the triune God is not an easy concept to wrap our minds around. Our greatest theologians have spent centuries pondering the very same question. So you're in good company.

The most helpful explanation I’ve heard so far is that the love between the Father and the Son is so strong and intense that it is alive. It’s so real that it’s a person. And this person is the Holy Spirit. And this relationship is God. This is why we say that God is Love.

And now, maybe that made a little sense to you. Or maybe you’re more confused than you were before you started reading this. If so, it’s still okay. Just keep chewing on it for a while in the company of all who are trying to understand.
